Reliance

In the course Invention Design we dealt with the question of how new technologies and interaction models are changing human-machine communication with regard to the future. The task
was to deal with a technology from the Gardner Hype circle of our choice and
to work out an application or future scenario.

Research

Around 466 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss and 34 million of these are children. It is estimated that by 2050 over 900 million people will have disabling hearing loss and that is where reliance comes into play. Reliance helps deaf people to deal with everyday situation, no matter where they are. It helps them be more independent and gives them the opportunity to communicate with people, who doesn't know the sign language. After knowing these facts we wanted to have an impact and help these people. We asked many people about what do they need the most these days and the answer was independence.

Conception

Our goal is to make deaf people more independence, normally deaf people need someone to accompany them. In able to do that we had to figure out how be able to translate sign language. We had few ideas like using sensor gloves, smart rings and motion tracking devices. After doing a user research we decided to choose smart rings in combination with leap motion to translate the sign language. The next step was to choose the gadget where the sign language translation is going to be displayed on. After long researching it turned out that smart watches had the most advantages, They are smart, fast, easy accessible and could be used on daily basis.

Scenario

Scenarios help to understand and illustrate how people experience products and services at a deeper, more contextual level, and how their needs and expectations change over time. Our scenario shows how the combination between the smart watch and the rings would actually work in a real life situation.

Features & Overviews

While developing our concept, we took design principles in consideration. Contrast, shapes, colors, illustrations, scale, repetition, transparency, texture, grid, directions, general design rules, movement and typography all of these qualities were important to create a clear interface image.

3D Modelling

Virtual 3D models can save time and effort while increasing productivity.

We designed a smart watch and a smart ring using cinema4d software in order to get a glimpse of how our smart watch would actually look like.

Product

Humans are visual by nature. A single snapshot of a product can provide more relevant information about the product’s quality than paragraphs of text. That is why we tried to give our users a glimpse on how our product would/could look in real life. Using Rhino we created 3D ring models in order to be able to 3D print it. The ring material was also important, since the user has to wear them most time of the day, that is why we used rubber to 3D print the rings.
